After dinner, April got up the courage to talk to Gavin. She went by his house but he wasn’t there. She guessed he might be on the roof of the firehouse, a place he liked to go to think. Thunder sounded in the distance. A storm was rolling in. It was a hot day and April welcomed the relief a shower would provide, cooling things off but not until after she got home.
As she’d expected, Gavin was there on the fire station roof, looking up at the sky. She climbed the fire escape to the second floor then continued all the way to the roof. The thunder was getting louder and a vein of light streaked across the sky. She shivered, nervous to get so high up when there was lightning. She called to him and he turned around.
“What are you doing here?” he asked, putting down the binoculars.
“I’ve come to ask a favor.”
“You got a lot of nerve.”
“I need your help.” She put her hands behind her back and shifted her weight.
“What for?”
“There was a bear, a black bear at the Dumpster this morning when I went with the garbage and she had two cubs with her...”
“A mother bear can be dangerous. You shouldn’t be anywhere near a mother with her cubs,” warned Gavin.
“I know, I didn’t ask to be. She was raiding the trash. Hal suggested I get a gun and learn how to shoot. But I’m afraid of guns...” she said, biting her cuticle.
“Why don’t you call on your boyfriend to help you?”
“Come on, Gavin. Not fair.”
“I’ve got a .22 semi-automatic. I suppose I could lend it to you. Do you know how to use a gun?” He walked closer to her.
She shook her head. The loudest clap of thunder she ever heard sounded, April screamed and jumped into Gavin’s arms. Lightning flashed a few seconds later, lighting up the sky, and April hid her face in his shoulder. Then the heavens opened up. Rain poured down, so thick it was like a wall of water cascaded down upon them. April and Gavin were quickly soaked through, as if someone dumped a bucket of water over their heads.
Water ran in rivulets down her face and matted her hair to her head. Gavin’s blue T-shirt stuck to his chest. Water soaked his eyelashes, causing them to clump together, giving his eyes a black look. April folded one arm across her chest, trying in vain to keep her T-shirt dry; however it was soaked through almost immediately despite her efforts. After only moments in the rain, their shorts were almost as wet as their shirts.
Gavin’s jean shorts hung heavy and low on his hips, while April’s lightweight dark pink cotton shorts clung to her curves, and she knew they showed way too much. She tugged at them, freeing them from one leg, repeated the process on the second leg, only to have to return to the first leg. Fortunately, the color kept them from being see-through. The temperature dropped several degrees in a matter of minutes.
